Ceramic photo for an urn and columbarium
Cremation has become an increasingly common choice, and along with it come new questions: what kind of photograph goes on an urn, what fits on the plate of a columbarium niche, and how it's mounted, when the space is only a few centimetres.
Which sizes fit
The practical rule is to go down one or two levels from what you'd choose for a regular monument. On an urn, plaques of 8x8 or 10x8 cm look the most natural; anything larger throws the object off balance. On the plate of a columbarium niche, where the name and dates sit alongside, 10x8 or 12.5x9.5 cm are the usual limits.

Which shape works
The oval remains the safest choice, because it has no corners that could bump against the edges of the plate. The circle works well on round urns. The rectangle suits modern niches, with straight granite plates, where everything is aligned.
Mounting, with extra care
On an urn, the surface is curved or lacquered, and the plaque is small — so the adhesive needs to be applied in a thin, even layer, not in dots, to avoid gaps. On a niche plate, the procedure is the same as for a regular monument: cleaning, degreasing, adhesive on the back of the plaque, fixed with paper tape until the next day.
If the urn still needs to be moved or transported, it's better to mount the plaque after it's been permanently placed. Ceramic doesn't withstand impacts, and an urn carried from one place to another is exactly the situation where they happen.
The photograph
At small sizes, it matters even more that the face is large in the frame. A group photo, where the person appears from a distance, doesn't give a good result at 8x8 cm. Send us the file and we'll tell you honestly whether it supports the size, or whether it's better to look for another photograph.
