A plaque where the name, dates and a short text are fired into ceramic, not painted on top. It's fitted to a cross, a monument, the plate of a columbarium niche or a memorial wall, and withstands sun, rain and frost without losing its clarity.
What a memorial plaque is
It is a small ceramic or porcelain plate onto which text is applied — the full name, birth and death dates, sometimes a verse or a dedication — and, on request, a photograph. The text and image are fired together at high temperature, so they become part of the surface itself.
It is used in two situations: either as an alternative to an inscription engraved in stone, or as an addition, when the headstone no longer has room for a longer text or when the monument is shared by two people.

Ceramic plaque or engraved inscription
A stone engraving lasts as long as the stone does, but it has one practical drawback: it cannot be corrected. A misspelled letter, a mixed-up date, or a wish to add something later means reworking the surface. A ceramic plaque is fixed on with stone adhesive and can be replaced at any time, at a much lower cost than a stonemason's work.
The second advantage is the material: engraving requires polished granite, preferably dark in colour. A ceramic plaque can be fitted to marble, granite of any shade, mosaic, concrete or wood.
